Camping users at Praia de Faro go to court to try to stop eviction

Users say they intend to leave, but they cannot

Users of the Praia de Camping Park Faro today presented a Provisional Measure in the Administrative Court of Loulé to try to prevent the departure from that space, following the end of the lending agreement they had with the Chamber, which officially ended yesterday, the 15th.

About a year ago, the Chamber of Faro approved the termination of the lending contract that it had with the Association of Users and Friends of the Praia de Camping Park Faro (AUAPPCF). At the same time, the procedure for carrying out the renovation works of this former campsite was launched, the contractor chosen and a date announced for the start of the works: 1 October.

The reaction of the Association of Users and Friends of the Praia de Camping Park Faro (AUAPCPF) did not wait. Today, at a press conference, the direction of the association guaranteed that it is not able to leave the old campsite and that it will only be able to vacate the space when the Chamber of Faro create the necessary conditions for this.

At issue are two cases of people "who do not have another home or the means to rent a house or a room", but also the alleged impossibility of removing some of the motorhomes that exist in Praia de Park Faro, for “they do not fit on the bridge”, as revealed by Luís Arsénio, president of the AUAPCPF.

"There is the human part, people who have lived here for more than 25 years and who are unable to move elsewhere," he said. The Social Action Services of the Chamber of Faro, he assured, have long been aware of the existence of these social cases. The technicians of this local authority service were recently at the park, “but they left without talking to anyone”.

Another problem that users of the space point out is the fact that some of the motorhomes do not fit on the bridge. Because, they recall, “a few years ago the sides of the beach access bridge were raised to allow the passage of pipes. Since then, some of the caravans have not been able to pass», guaranteed the president of the (AUAPCPF).

This is, in the view of users, a problem “that the City will have to solve”, if it wants to see the current occupants of the park from outside. Until then, they refuse to leave.

Here, the association that represents the current occupants of the park makes the reservation that it is their intention to leave this space, so be able to – «we never said, nor do we say we didn't». In other words, they want to leave, but claim they can't.

Despite this guarantee, the association hired the services of a lawyer – none other than João Botelheiro, former president of the Chamber of Faro elected by the PS – to… try to avoid the exit.

João Botelheiro

According to João Botelheiro, this first action, which has already been filed with the Loulé Administrative Court, serves to “try to stop the process and have time to think”. Later, the association's legal representative ponders proceeding with a request to declare “the nullity or ineffectiveness of the administrative act” that determines that the current occupants have to leave the space.

Users of Praia de Faro do not spare criticism of the Chamber of Faro and to its president Rogério Bacalhau, firstly because of the "inelegant" way in which he announced the termination of the lending contract - "we learned of the intention by the media, it was never directly transmitted to us", but also because of what they consider to be "disinformation" that was passed. the population.

«We always defend a park open to all Farenses. We have always fought for the possibility that people from far away can also use the space in recent years. That just didn't happen because the Chamber didn't want to», said Luís Arsénio.

On the other hand, the association criticizes the position of the municipal executive over the last year, since since the denunciation of the loan “there has never been a dialogue initiated by the Chamber”.

Even so, the two parties met, in two meetings requested by users, to explain "the existing difficulties". In these meetings, "in which the mayor and councilor Sophie Matias participated", they were asked to explain, in writing, the problems that prevented them from leaving the park, something they did.

"The answer we received is that we had another 15 days to get our things out," said the president of the AUAPCPF.

However, before these fifteen days, the association and the park's occupants had a year to prepare for their departure – when the City Council only had to give it two months, by law.

And what was done at this time in order to vacate the space? "We presented the list of obstacles" to the City Council for leaving the old campsite, said Luís Arsénio.
