Olhão takes another step towards building an Animal Collection Center

Chamber wants to launch a tender for the work in the first half of 2020

The Municipality of Olhão awarded the contract for the elaboration of the project of specialties for the future Animal Collection Center in the municipality of Olhão, «a fundamental equipment for animal welfare in the municipality».

The municipality of Olho expects that this phase is completed by the end of the year, "so that, still in the first quarter of 2020, a tender for the construction can be launched".

«The new municipal kennel and cattery will be a reference equipment at the national level, endowed with decent conditions, both for resident animals, for employees, and for potential adopters», assured the City Council of Olhão.

The infrastructure will be implemented on a municipal land plot with an area of nearly 8 thousand square meters (m2), located in Sítio da Alecrineira, in the parish of Quelfes, with a planned construction area of more than 2 thousand m2.

The main building will be dedicated to services and "includes the administrative area, medical and veterinary office, infirmary, pharmacy, operating room and recovery room".

The animals will be housed in three dog accommodation buildings, with a capacity for 150 animals, and one for cat accommodation, with a capacity of 32.

There will be two more buildings, one for storage and the other for separate dog and cat adoption zones, as well as a bathing and shearing room.

"The Official Animal Collection Center of Olhão will be complete with an area for housing livestock species," added the municipality of Olhão.

The Chamber of Olhão also pointed out that «despite the limitations that the current Collection Center presents, numerous actions in favor of the well-being of animals continue to be developed, in partnership and under the collaboration protocols established with other entities of animal protection, namely the sterilization of colony felines'.

With regard to sterilization, «since the beginning of the year, approximately 70 canids and 170 cats, male and female, have been treated, thanks to the new operating room in the kennel, operating since August, and to the protocol. with a Veterinary Care Center, the latter aiming at the sterilization of bitches housed in the kennel».

This protocol "will soon be extended to stray cats, in order to provide an even more effective response to needs."

Furthermore, «and aware of the importance of mass sterilization of stray animals, the municipality also submitted an application for financial support for the sterilization of dogs and cats».

Another aspect of the work done by the municipality in favor of animal welfare is encouraging adoption, with 64 animals having been sent to new homes by the beginning of September.

«In the near future, the transformation of a vehicle for transporting pet animals, to operate in the municipal kennel, will also be completed, as well as the allocation of shelters for felines in strategic locations in the county where there are colonies and care for stray animals injured, in partnership with a veterinary hospital in the region», concluded the Chamber.
