In the new “365Algarve” there is Via Algarviana, sliced bread, contraband and much more

Discover the highlights of the vast program

Repeaters such as “Lavrar o Mar”, the Festival do Contraband and “Jazz in the Cellars” or premieres such as the Forgotten Food Festival, the “Out (In)verno” or the “In Canto pela Algarviana”. The fourth edition of 365Algarve it has a lot to offer, from October this year to May 2020, based on the idea of territory as a landscape on a human scale that can be explored on foot.

Thus, one of the main axes of this year's program is to reflect on the idea of Europe and the relationship with the geography we inhabit.

Starting from this premise, which George Steiner explores in his essay “The Idea of Europe”, the "365Algarve" proposes a program that will allow, through the pace of the walker, to get to know squares and streets better, the details of the common space and the beauty of our heritage.

The programming for this cycle underlines this connection to the land and territory on a human scale. An example of this is the Forgotten Food Festival, which will pass through Azilheira (São Marcos da Serra), village of Penina (Loulé), Santo Estêvão (Tavira), Cacela Velha or even Giões (Alcoutim), São Brás de Alportel, Lagoa and Ermida de Our Lady of Guadalupe (Vila do Bispo).

Along the memory trails of an Algarve from the 1930s and 1940s, this new project offers culinary experiences in monumental places, tours in the gardens, with food harvesting and cooking classes, in a big party dedicated to the table of Algarve families.

With activities in October, November and December and then monthly between February and May 2020, this is a compliment to grandma's table, at a festival that wants to seat generations of residents and visitors at the table.

Another novelty that emphasizes the theme of this fourth edition is the program “(A)Prender-me no Algarve”. Aboard a loaf van, people will be invited to revisit and learn about the heritage, customs, traditions and musicalities of what constitutes and formed the Algarve people.

Once a month, between October and May, this will be an experience that will take us physically and metaphorically through time and through the history of the local human landscape. The initiative will pass through the municipalities of Portimão, Silves, Lagoa and Albufeira.

Also for the first time in the “365Algarve” program, Out (In)verno will bring an offer in the field of astro-tourism, linking the arts and scientific dissemination through themed concerts, walks and science workshops.

An event that will liven up the nights between the 1st and 3rd of November and which is repeated in January and May. It will be in São Marcos da Serra, municipality of Silves.

But “365Algarve” is not just about novelties and the public will be able to count on the continuation of reference events such as “Lavrar o Mar”, with about 90 sessions, between Aljezur and Monchique, in this new programming cycle.

The special highlight goes back to the already traditional sessions of the new circus on New Year's Eve, bringing together some of the best European companies of its kind.

Another emblematic project of “365Algarve” that will return is Jazz nas Adegas, in Silves. Between October and May, this event, which has been increasingly sought after by both national and international audiences, will continue with double sessions per concert, in order to meet the huge demand.

In November, the LUZA - Algarve International Light Festival, moves from Loulé to Faro.

In March, the Festival of Contraband will return to Alcoutim to recall the paths that smugglers had in the border region. Focusing on a cultural and historical legacy of recent collective memory in the region and throughout the border area, it is still possible to recall the paths and procedures of smugglers in the 1930s and early 1940s, with the end of the Spanish Civil War and the beginning of World War II.

On the 120th anniversary of the birth of popular poet António Aleixo, Rede Azul – Algarve Theater Network, commissioned the show “Diz-me António” to three Algarve artists.

With national prominence, in its debut, the second edition of FICLO - International Film and Literature Festival of Olhão, integrates the programming of “365Algarve”, with an artistic residency of an internationally renowned scriptwriter.

The initiative will take place between the end of March and the beginning of April, in various spaces in the municipality of Olhão. Promoted by the Cineclube de Tavira, this is a new proposal in the region, which was also invited to be represented at the Cannes Film Festival 2019.

The Summer Blue Festival will take place in the middle of the low season – between October and November – and will bring to the Algarve internationally renowned names in contemporary performing arts, such as Niño de Elche (music/flamenco) and Alessandro Sciarroni (Golden Lion of the 2019 Venice Biennale ). In this, which is the ninth edition of this festival, it is worth highlighting the investment in the creation of spaces for interaction and meeting between artists, the community and the public, in Faro, Lagos and Loulé.

Also during the month of October, the event Poesia a Sul will invade the city of Olhão with numerous activities related to poetry, including music, exhibitions, workshops and round tables. Poets from around 30 nationalities gather at this international meeting which will also promote sessions in Tavira, Faro and Seville.

New proposal at “365Algarve”, the LAC Open Days – LAC Creative Activities Laboratory will have a strong urban art component and intends to show the work of artists in residence at the LAC space, in Lagos.

The project also includes visits to the urban art circuit in Lagos, stencil workshops and a contemporary art tour through low-density territories that were the target of artistic interventions created under the WATT? project: an artistic project for the community, promoted in 2016. The various proposals take place in October to May.

“Em Canto pela Algarviana” is another unprecedented project that appears, for the first time, in the “365Algarve” program, promoted by Grupo Coral Ossónoba.

In total, there will be a set of six tours on specific sections of the Via Algarviana, which will be complemented with musical moments made from the group's repertoire.

The experience will be complemented with gastronomic moments in restaurants along the route or with participation in traditional festivals in some of the localities, such as the Festa do Pão Quente and Queijo Fresco de Vaqueiros, in Alcoutim.

The initiative will take place once a month, from October to March, and will pass through Marmelete, Monchique, Alte, São Bartolomeu de Messines, Vaqueiros and Alcoutim.

After a well-attended third edition, the Algarve International Piano Festival will return for its fourth edition, between Portimão, Loulé and Faro. With a total of 10 concerts, the festival starts in November, with a concert by the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra, from China, returning then every month, between January and April.

In February, it will be the opportunity to receive the Festival Amendoeiras em Flor.

This is an initiative that will bring, for two days, to the site of Cumeada de Alta Mora, in Castro Marim, a market of local and regional products and crafts, with a strong traditional and popular musical program, street theater, activities for children, based on traditional games, typical cuisine and several walking routes.

The star of the party is the Algarve almond, which will be celebrated with the making of a giant almond pie and with workshops for planting almond trees, in a territory so marked by desertification, depopulation and aging of the population.

In February, April and May we will also be able to be “À Babuja”.

Directed by João de Brito, this is a new creation that will feature one of the most innovative and original voices in young Portuguese literature: Joana Bértholo.

This is a narrative inspired by five words deeply linked to the gastronomic universe of the Algarve: carob, anchovy, arbutus, Muxama and Dom Rodrigo.

It will be a scent of Algarve that, with an original food trailer, will pass by Faro, Loulé, Lagos, São Brás de Alportel, Quarteira, Alte, Moncarapacho, Fuzeta, Vila Real de Santo António, Sagres, Castro Marim, Pechão and Vila do Bispo.
