July had a record 3 million overnight stays in the Algarve

Algarve numbers contrast with results at national level

The Algarve reached, for the first time, the mark of three million overnight stays in July, according to data just released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

These numbers represent an increase of 0,7% compared to the same period of the previous year.

In July, foreigners once again boosted regional tourist activity, making 2,147 million overnight stays (+1,4% or +28 overnight stays from non residents), to which a total of 850 thousand overnight stays from Portuguese were added, totaling 856 million.

According to INE, the Algarve registered 1/3 of overnight stays in hotels in Portugal in the first seven months of the year.

«In terms of the hotel sector, the Algarve represented 33,2% of overnight stays since the beginning of the year, followed by the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, with a share of 25,5%», explains the institute.

At regional level, this indicator shows an evolution of 2,7%, to 11,6 million overnight stays in the Algarve hotel industry in the accumulated period from January to July.

Analyzing overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments by municipality, five Algarve municipalities – Albufeira, Loulé, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira – stand out among the ten largest in the country.

As for guests and income, the destination's monthly results are even more expressive, with growth of 5,3% in the number of guests, to 662 thousand, and 6,5% in total income, to 212,4 million euros . Since the beginning of 2019, the Algarve region has already accumulated 2,8 million guests (+8,5%) and 644,6 million euros in total income (+7,6%).

In the month of July, the Airport of Faro handled 1,173 million passengers, an increase of 2,2% compared to the previous year, with emphasis on passengers with origin and destination in the United Kingdom (+4,1%) and Ireland (+6,1%). In the first seven months of 2019, the movement of passengers at the Airport grew 5,7%, to 5,1 million.

For the rest, the figures in the Algarve contrast with the results at a national level, as INE signaled a slowdown in the growth rate of tourist accommodation activity, in July.
