Hospital denies cancellation of cancer surgeries due to air conditioning breakdown

Situation was denounced by Cristóvão Norte

The Hospital and University Center of the Algarve (CHUA) today denied the cancellation of "urgent or emerging" cancer surgeries due to malfunctions in the air conditioning of the Central Block of the Hospital de Faro. The situation had been denounced, this Tuesday, 3 September, by Cristóvão Norte, Algarve deputy of the PSD.

Ao Sul Informação, the Board of Directors of CHUA confirmed the malfunction in the air conditioning system, but guaranteed that «urgent and emergent surgeries were carried out through the support of the two operating rooms installed in the Outpatient Operating Room and in two rooms in the Central Operating Room» .

The Board of Directors also stated that "cancer surgeries and others of a priority and scheduled nature were performed", admitting that "other surgeries, of a non-urgent nature and likely to be performed on another date, were rescheduled".

The Social Democrat deputy Cristóvão Norte, in the communiqué sent to the newsrooms, presented a different version, saying that the closure of the Central Block had forced the postponement of "more than a hundred surgeries", including cancer patients.

The CHUA, in the response sent to the questions posed by the Sul Informação, also announced that the new air conditioning equipment will be delivered today, September 3rd, and that it has been working, partially, since Thursday.

In his communiqué, the Social Democratic deputy also accused the Government of "doing nothing", nor being moved by "the gravity of the events". "What is happening is causing great social alarm, despairing doctors and users, and this is the result of the declaration of war on investment," added Cristóvão Norte.

“In 2016, the Government announced a package of 19 million for the CHUA and applied 6, not carrying out the replacement of diagnostic equipment, nor the maintenance of support equipment, such as this one that has now broken down and stops the surgery. There has never been so little investment in health in the Algarve», reinforced the Algarve parliamentarian from the PSD.

In response, the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve states that it regrets “that the Honorable Member has not previously questioned the Board of Directors, in order to find out and inform about the entire situation, before sending a communiqué with information that does not correspond. to the truth of the facts'.
