Sailing boats of various sizes and class, from Portugal and Spain, will participate in the Guadiana River Up and Down regatta, which will link Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) and Alcoutim, on Saturday and Sunday.
This is a competition «whose basic spirit is to discover and bring the Guadiana river closer to all sportsmen, both professionals and amateurs», according to the Associação Naval do Guadiana, which organizes the event in partnership with the Club Náutico de Isla Canela and with the support of the Chambers of VRSA and Alcoutim, Junta de Andalucia and Ayuntamiento de Ayamonte.
The regatta has a strong conviviality component, taking into account that the participants dine together and spend the night in Alcoutim, after going upriver on Saturday. On Sunday, after returning to VRSA, there is another moment of celebration.
In all, sailors are challenged to sail 18.5 miles (32 kilometers) on both Saturday and Sunday.
«Any internationally recognized class vessel with a handicap equal to or greater than the Optimist's, as well as Open class boards, may participate. Cruises will be divided into: less than 8 meters; from 8 to 10 meters; from 10 to 12 meters and more than 12 meters», according to the organization.
Registration confirmation must be made up to one hour before departure at the Guadiana Naval Association building/headquarters.
