The Independent Trade Union of Doctors/Alentejo today regretted, in a statement, "the closure of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Emergency Service of the José Joaquim Fernandes Hospital, in Beja, yesterday and today, due to a lack of doctors in the respective specialty" .

According to SIM, as a result of this situation, "pregnant women and mothers in the region of Beja are currently without urgent care" in that hospital.

The Independent Union of Physicians, which claims that the situation is "a consequence of the incapacity" of the Local Health Unit of Baixo Alentejo (ULSBA) and the Government to "attract and secure doctors in the National Health Service", adds that it has warned "several times , that the continuous disorganization on medical assistance in the obstetric emergency and emergency” would eventually lead to “unfortunate decisions like this one”.

"We see the lack of health care services in the emergency of this specialty that will have to be transferred to other hospitals, putting into question the quality and safety of care," adds YES, in its statement.

The Independent Union of Physicians demands from the José Joaquim Fernandes Hospital administration the «urgent adoption of measures, including the immediate hiring of specialist doctors, with replacement of the minimum number necessary to ensure the clinical safety of patients and the provision of quality care in Gynecology and Obstetrics».

The Union also alerts the Medical Association "for this serious situation" and calls for the "special commitment of the Government to resolve this uncertainty and uncertainty that harms professionals and patients."

The situation was reported on the 12th of this month by the ULSBA Board of Directors, which announced that, in the period "between 6 am on August 13th and 8:00 am on the 14th", "due to the lack of doctors in the Specialty of Obstetrics”, there is no “assistance in this specialty, only internal urgency is guaranteed”.

Therefore, in the communiqué signed by the executive member Iria Velez, it was informed that the pregnant women who, during that period, had resorted to the Obstetric Emergency Service of Hospital de Beja would have to be transferred.
