Work of "extreme importance" allows the conclusion of the Circular Norte de Loulé

Contract costs 4 million euros

The tender for the completion of the Circular Norte de Loulé, with the construction of the section between the roundabout of the Municipal Pavilion and that of Barreiras Brancas, has already been launched and, «if all goes well, the contract will start in April of next year».

The information was provided by Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, to the Sul Informação. The project was approved, last August 14th, at a meeting of the municipal executive, with votes against by the PSD.

“This is an extremely important work that will allow the completion of Circular Norte. There is a lot of traffic that will start to be done outside the city», he considered in statements to our newspaper.

But the entire process to complete this Circular (which currently starts at the roundabout before the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade and ends near the Municipal Pavilion) began in February 2017.

At the time, the Câmara de Loulé and the company Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) concluded an agreement which allowed the Loulé autarchy to assume all the powers of the National Road 270 – where the Circular Norte passes through. Thus, the costs of the work (4 million euros) will all be borne by the Chamber.

This new section to be built will be different from the one that already exists, as it will be a single road with two directions.

“There will be a lane for a cycle path and a pedestrian walkway. Here there is the abandonment of a philosophy: the road that exists has four lanes, two in each direction. Our current standard bets on more environmentally friendly mobility», explained the mayor.

The project foresees, with regard to the owners of the land through which the Circular will pass, “an initial phase of friendly negotiation”. “If an agreement is not reached, it moves towards an expropriation process”, said Vítor Aleixo.

It is certain that the PS/Loulé has already gone public to applaud the conclusion of the Circular Norte.

"The realization of this work allows solving a structural problem of great importance for the well-being of populations, a fact of great political and social relevance," said the socialists, in a statement.

After the completion of the work, the remaining project will proceed: the ring road, to the south, of Loulé. But then the philosophy will be different, with the road being integrated into an urban and agricultural park.
