Silvense Museum celebrates 29 years of existence

The Municipal Museum of Archeology of Silves (MMAS) will have free entry on 3 September, the day this cultural space celebrates 29 years of existence.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, visitors will be able to enjoy the exhibition “Silves in time and by the sea”, open until February.

This exhibition “intends to make known Silves's close relationship with the sea, both in terms of the exploration of its resources and the access point across the Arade River to other places, with which it had commercial relations and shared ideas. Based on this constant relationship and proximity to the sea, this exhibition intends to go through the most important points in the history of Silves», according to Câmara de Silves.

The MMAS was built around an Almohad Well-Cisterna from the 80th-XNUMXth centuries – which became the centerpiece of the collection and of the exhibition discourse – discovered after archaeological excavations carried out in the XNUMXs of the XNUMXth century. XX and today classified as a National Monument.

«Scenographically, the museum also integrates the city wall from the same period, thus functioning not only as a museum where the exhibited collections are very significant, but also as a jewel of the Islamic heritage in Portugal. The Museum's collection, mostly from excavations in the city and county, brings together a set of objects from the Paleolithic, the oldest, through the Neolithic, the Chalcolithic, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Roman Period », added the municipality.

«Outstanding not only for their quantity, but also for their quality and exception, the pieces from the Medieval Period, with emphasis on the Muslim Period – Umayyad, Califal, Taifa, Almoravid and Almohad, from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century, at its greatest part of the Almohad period, from the XNUMXth to XNUMXth centuries – which are proof of the wealth and importance of the city in that historical period. The collection also brings together an important set of objects from the modern period – XNUMXth, XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries –, which demonstrate the influence of trade routes and the importance of the city's exchanges and contacts with other regions of the globe. Divided into eight thematic nuclei, the collection can be visited chronologically from the Paleolithic to the XNUMXth century», concluded the Chamber of Silves.
