Monchique will be “VilaPalco” for a new cultural festival

Event aims to celebrate the heritage and cultural identity of Monchique

Monchique will become a stage for music, performances and other cultural activities for three days. The first edition of the VilaPalco festival, which was born from the dream of four young people from Monchique, will take place between the 23rd and 25th of August.

Alice Duarte, Joana Cordeiro, Mara Reis and Zé Nunes are the young people from Monchique who will fulfill «a common and ancient desire»: design a cultural program centered «on artistic potentials and the creation of knowledge and intercultural dialogue, based on heritage and of the richness of the crossing between the people who inhabit and visit the territory».

«A multidisciplinary team was formed to (re)think the village as a natural stage where people are invited to know and reflect on their cultural identity, their heritage and to create new projects and appropriations», describes the team behind of VilaPalco.

"We believe in the innovative character and relevance of this festival, as a celebration of the value of our rurality and the contribution to artistically stimulate communities, taking into account the creation of places for participation in the educational project, which aims to create a web of connections that value the territory and help ensure its sustainability at different levels,” they added.

Anyone who goes to Monchique during the festival will be able to count on a cross-disciplinary crossover of artistic proposals. The VilaPalco team also emphasizes that part of the event's profit will be directed towards the «rehabilitation of heritage spaces that need intervention».

«Exploring the public space as a natural stage, we intend to break down the barriers that define each place on a daily basis, providing a weekend of celebration and also a reflection on our heritage and identity», they conclude.

This new festival is jointly organized by the municipality of Monchique and by the O Monchiqueiro Cultural Dynamization Group.
