hospital of Faro opens inquiry into the case of the baby who died

Ana Paula Gonçalves, president of CHUA, guarantees that "we did everything we should do"

the hospital of Faro has already determined the opening of an inquiry process to clarify the circumstances in which the pregnant woman at risk was transferred to Lisbon, whose premature baby ended up dying the next day, at the Amadora-Sintra hospital.

Ana Paula Gonçalves, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA), in statements to Sul Informação, underlined that, «from the analysis we made of the facts, in our perspective, we did everything we should do. As someone who shouldn't, doesn't fear, the best way to resolve this is to open an inquiry process. Incidentally, the Fernando da Fonseca hospital and the Public Ministry also opened inquiries. We will not have a lack of inquiry procedures».

The CHUA administrator added that, “on that day and in the way you presented yourself, [sending her to Lisbon] was the best decision. We have competent professionals, on that day there were even seniors here, the decision that was taken was the one that had to be. The incubators were occupied, we had six boys between 600 and 900 grams, four around 1000 grams, premature and large premature».

«Our unit is very good, it is almost an aggravation for professionals» all the alarm that the situation generated. Ana Paula Gonçalves stressed: «we are the only hospital in the Algarve with a Neonatology unit, there are several in Lisbon, today one is available, tomorrow another. Here it is just us».

According to Correio da Manhã, the doctors considered that the pregnant woman, a 23-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital in Faro on August 2, she had symptoms of pre-eclampsia, which put both mother and baby at risk. So they decided that they would have to give birth prematurely.

Only, with the incubators of the hospital of Faro all occupied, the woman had to be transported by ambulance to the Amadora-Sintra hospital, 290 kilometers away.

Also according to the newspaper Correio da Manhã, the delivery took place by cesarean, the next day, August 3rd, but the baby died.
