PAN requires classification of Alagoas Brancas as a protected zone

Party also asks the ICNF to carry out a new study to replace an opinion given in 2017 that environmentally devalued Alagoas Brancas

The Alagoas Brancas «should be classified as a protected area» by the Câmara de Lagoa, in light of the conclusions of a study carried out recently by the environmental association Almargem, defends the PAN do Algarve.

The PAN has already questioned the Ministry of Environment and Energy Transition about the threats to this area "of proven ecosystem relevance in terms of the diversity and rarity of its flora and fauna" and demands that the ICNF carry out a new study, to replace "the incorrect document » which launched in 2017.

The suggestion is that the municipality use the means at its disposal and create "a Local Protection Perimeter (PPL) and a Special Protection Zone (ZPE) to guarantee the preservation and sustainability of Alagoas in the long term."

For the People – Animals – Nature party, the environmental value of this area was proven in a recent study by Almargem, a document that can and should serve as a justification for classifying this area in the municipality of Lagoa.

In this way, it is now proven that the opinion given by the ICNF about two years ago and in which it was said, «basically, that the Alagoas Brancas were devoid of value for the avifauna» and that disregarded its classification, «lacked validity for part of the scientific community'.

«It is this fact that the study of Almargem brings. Thus, the way in which issues related to the management of this area are addressed must necessarily be reconsidered», defends the PAN.

In addition to the official classification of Alagoas Brancas as a protected zone, this party calls for «the process of classifying Alagoas Brancas as one of the “Ramsar” sites for the protection of wetlands at a global level, based on the agreement signed by Portugal in 1980” .

It also requests that European directives for the protection of migratory birds be followed and that “work is made to include Alagoas Brancas as part of the IBA (Important Bird Areas) network, one of the largest global networks for the protection of birds and conservation of their habitats'.
