Hoteliers expect summer with less English and more French

Survey was carried out by the Hotel Association of Portugal (AHP)

For this summer, hoteliers in the Algarve forecast a worse performance in the English, German and Dutch markets, but a growth in the number of American and French tourists, according to a survey carried out by the Hotel Association of Portugal (AHP).

According to this study, which analyzed the reservations already made in the national hotel industry for the period from July to September, national hoteliers indicate that the occupancy rate and the average stay will be identical.

However, they foresee a better ARR (average price for four occupied) and RevPAR (average price per available room).

In the case of the Algarve, 86% of respondents expect an occupancy rate of hotels above 80%.

As for the average stay indicator, 49% of the people in the Algarve expect tourists to stay for between three to five days.

"We have been following, with particular attention, the evolution of the German and English markets, but especially of the German market, which has been decreasing, in terms of number of guests, in Madeira and the Algarve and the information collected in this survey proves that", he says. Cristina Siza Vieira, CEO of AHP.

«48% of respondents in Madeira and 43% in the Algarve expect a worse performance from the German market. As for the English market, Madeira is more optimistic, in contrast to the Algarve where 63% of respondents expect a worse performance from this outbound market. This pessimism is mainly due to the lack of definition of Brexit and the bankruptcy of some airlines, the last of which is Germania Airlines, which operated to these two national destinations and which come to reduce the offer of weekly flights», concludes the responsible.
