Hospital de Portimão may run out of pediatricians between now and Sunday

Patients may have to be transferred to Faro

Pediatrics at the Hospital de Portimão may be without pediatricians during the weekend, which will require the transfer of children and babies to the Hospital de Faro. The situation was confirmed this morning by Marta Temido, Minister of Health, who visited the hospital unit.

The government official confirmed to journalists that “we have difficulties in filling out the scales this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If these difficulties are confirmed, if we are left without a pediatric specialist in the hospital, the means are organized for patients to be referred to the Hospital of Faro, from today, at the end of the day».

However, Marta Temido does not take the situation for granted, since “contacts are still being made today that can guarantee that this is not necessary”.

The minister guaranteed that the internment «is working at the moment» and that there will not be a closure of services because «we are talking about a hospital integrated in a Hospital Center that has several centers and the Hospital de Faro can provide support if needed. What there may be is a referral of patients who enter here again through the emergency room and there may be a need to transport, to Faro, Children of Neonatology».

The minister says that the priority at the moment is «to solve the problems on the scales. We are convinced that, from the end of the month and until the end of August, with the reinforcement of professionals from other parts of the country, these situations will never happen again», he concluded.

The PSD Algarve has already publicly criticized the situation at the Hospital de Portimão, which constitutes «a lack of protection for babies and children, which, as we have underlined, has become the new normal, with successive and interminable episodes that wipe out the trust of children. families in the NHS and violate access to health».

The Social Democrats also recall the situation of the maternity hospital in Portimão, «which does not have a stopover in 33 days until the end of August", and say that "in view of these facts, these pressing and recognized needs, it must be an absurd decision not to open vacancies for these specialties in the Algarve, in a competition that the Government designed to respond to the greatest needs it detected in the parents".

In obstetrics, «no 12 vacancies were opened for the Algarve. In pediatrics 5, none for the Algarve», they emphasize.

The PSD Algarve «has already mandated its deputies, Cristóvão Norte and José Carlos Barros, in the hearing with the Minister of Health, which will take place this week, to demand solutions, as they have done, to all these issues that so penalize the Algarve», concludes the statement.
