Pregnant had to be transferred to Évora due to the lack of maternity hospitals in the Algarve

Maternity of Faro was already full and the one in Portimão was…closed

A woman, 28 weeks pregnant, had to be transferred in the early hours of this Sunday, 7 July, from Portimão to Évora due to “lack of response in the units in the Algarve”.

The situation was denounced by the Independent Union of Doctors (SIM) and the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA) confirmed the situation to SIC.

The birth block of the Maternity of Portimão was, this weekend, closed due to the «fact that it is not possible to guarantee the support of a pediatrician with skills in the area of neonatology in that unit», justified the CHUA.

Therefore, only the Maternity of Faro it worked and, when this pregnant woman arrived there, the admissions were already full.

In the same note, the CHUA said that "a national competition for admission of medical personnel to the hospital area is underway, two vacancies for pediatricians are open".
