Jorge Botelho is going to suspend the functions of mayor of Tavira and has until 26 August to do so. The deadline for abdicating the position of leader of AMAL – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve should also be the same.

The (still) mayor explained, this Wednesday, July 24, on the sidelines of a session, that the date to leave the Chamber is certain, but in AMAL the law is not so clear.

It is certain that Botelho will suspend both mandates due to the fact that he is part of the PS lists for the 6 October Legislative Elections, even going in 3rd place.

At AMAL, Osvaldo Gonçalves, president of the Alcoutim Chamber, will assume the position of president until the date of the elections.

Afterwards, Jorge Botelho will once again assume the AMAL portfolio (there is already a meeting scheduled for 11 October), but only until the new Assembly of the Republic takes office. This, of course, if elected as a deputy.

If you are one of those chosen by the Algarve in the Legislative, there will have to be an effective change in AMAL's leadership. "Either a decision is made to keep this mandate until the end, with the vice president [Osvaldo Gonçalves] becoming president, or a mid-term election is promoted," he explained to journalists.

At Tavira Chamber, Botelho will be replaced by Ana Paula Martins, current vice-president.

“He is someone who has accompanied me in this municipal process from day one. I have every confidence in Ana Paula Martins to continue the work I set out to do and which, fortunately, we are doing with competence», said Jorge Botelho.

If elected, the (still) mayor of Tavira guarantees that he will continue to be a voice for the defense of the Algarve, but in the Assembly of the Republic.

“My schedule remains the same. If we all do the same, and have a common agenda, I think we will achieve a lot that the Algarve needs, such as the issue of mobility, health, the quality of public services, the coast and the great issue of tourism», he said.

“All these are very important agendas. If we have a common thread, the region can be heard better», he concluded.

In Lagos, Maria Joaquina Matos, Mayor, will also have to suspend her post until 26 August.
