Albufeira exposes memories of the 1969 earthquake

The show will be open until August 17th

The exposure “February 28, 1969, Memories of the Earthquake” opens on 1st August at the Municipal Museum of Archeology in Albufeira.

The exhibition will be open until August 17, and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:30 am to 17:30 pm.

The inauguration will be attended by Arménio Aleluia, Victor de Sousa and Marcos Bila, who will share their memories of the earthquake that caused extensive damage, especially in the Algarve region.

The moment will also be used to talk about the various earthquakes that have devastated the county throughout history and for the Municipal Civil Protection Service to present some preventive measures to be adopted in the face of seismic risk.

It was 3:42 am on February 28, 1969 (local time) when mainland Portugal was awakened by a strong earthquake. The vibration lasted for a few minutes, causing severe damage.

The event occupied the front pages of newspapers for several days, with countless news being dedicated to it, some more tragic, others more informative and formative and still others that at this distance we can consider fun or mundane.

Victor de Sousa, at the time a photojournalist for Diário de Lisboa, covered the earthquake in the Barlavento Algarvio, where in the March 2nd edition, entitled “Confirmation: the Algarve was the biggest victim” reports that Fontes dos Louzeiros , a village 13 kilometers from Silves, was almost completely destroyed.

The exhibition “28 February 1969, memories of the earthquake”, promoted by CERU (European Center for Urban Risks) and by SPES (Portuguese Society for Seismic Engineering) with the support of the Municipality of Albufeira, through the Municipal Civil Protection Service ( SMPC) and the Municipal Museum of Archeology, aims to help preserve the collective memory of what happened on that date.

"Remembering the past to understand the present and preparing the future, contributing to the formation of responsible citizens and a preventive public awareness so that citizens know how to act in the event of an earthquake is what is intended", says the municipality.

Albufeira is part of the Network of Resilient Cities, also known as the “United Nations Resilient Cities in Portugal” program, so this exhibition, at municipal level, aims to strengthen the resilience and response capacity of the local community in the face of seismic risk.
