Algarve tourism had «sharp growth» in April

Easter helped to have a strong growth compared to 2018

Tourism activity had «a marked growth» in the Algarve, in April, compared to the same month of 2018, with significant increases in the main indicators, announced the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA).

The statistics of tourist activity in the Algarve, in April, were released by the National Statistics Institute and reveal that the Algarve hosted 1,8 million overnight stays, 13,6% more than in the same month of the previous year, 454 thousand guests (+ 16,3%) and 85,7 million euros (+19,2%), «growing much above the national average».

The Easter effect and the associated vacation period will have contributed to these results. Not least because the growth was “founded on the strong demand for the destination by the domestic market”.

"In April, overnight stays from residents in the region increased 34,1%, to 364 thousand overnight stays, and those from non residents increased by 9,3%, corresponding to 1,42 million overnight stays," according to the RTA.

Also in the first four months of the year, tourist accommodation in the Algarve registered 1 million guests (+10,3%) and 181,6 million euros in total income (+11,3%)», added the same entity.

With regard to private activity, data from Ana-Aeroportos indicate “that in the first quarter of the year, the airport of Faro grew 11,2% to 1,88 million passengers. Between January and April, Faro it handled 855 thousand passengers from the United Kingdom (+10,5%), which consolidates its position as the main source of tourists to the Algarve, followed by Germany, with 241,6 thousand (+17,5%), and by France, with 175,8 thousand (+15,9%)».

In hotel units, and according to the Association of Hotels and Touristic Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), the average overall occupancy rate per room was 68,4% in April, 12,1% above the value verified in 2018.
