Odemira evokes 1989 oil spill commemorating 30 years of the Clean Sea

Journeys, cinema, music, and environmental education will mark the date

Odemira will evoke the environmental disaster caused by the oil spill, which occurred at Praia do Almograve in 1989, with the initiative “30 years of the Clean Sea”, between 5 and 14 July.

According to the Chamber of Odemira, «this action is intended to pay homage to the citizens and entities that, in a unique way, contributed to the restoration of the natural and quality bathing conditions of the Southwest Coast after the tragic accident with the oil tanker “Marão” to the Largo de Sines and warn of the necessary assumption of responsibilities by the responsible entities in similar situations».

The autarchy recalls that, at the time, the municipality filed a lawsuit and costs to the company responsible for the occurrence.

On July 14, 1989 there was one of the biggest oil spills on the Portuguese coast, with the highest incidence at Praia do Almograve, due to the spillage of about 6 liters of oil, caused by the accident of the Marão Diários ship, when entering the Port of Sines .

"After 30 years, the challenge is to promote reflection and debate on the causes of the Marão accident and the main policies and measures currently in force to prevent and mitigate the impacts of hydrocarbon pollution occurrences", explains the Chamber of Odemira.

The program of activities begins with the Almogrooves Festival, on the 5th and 6th of July, at Praia do Almograve, an event that promotes music and environmental awareness. Between the 8th and 13th of July, several Environmental Education activities will be promoted at Praia do Almograve, aimed at children.

"How to keep the sea clean?" is the theme of the Jornadas do Mar Limpo, scheduled for the 9th of July, at 10:00 am, at the Pousada da Juventude de Almograve. This is followed by interpretive journeys on the beach guided by biologist João Castro and geologist Sérgio Maraschini.

On July 13, at 21 pm, at Praça dos Fuzileiros, in the village of Almograve, the documentary film on “30 Years of the Clean Sea” will be screened, followed by the performance of the Banda Filarmónica de Odemira.

On the 14th of July, at 15 pm, at Praia do Almograve, there will be the Evocative Ceremony for the 00th anniversary of the Clean Sea and the Flagging of the Clean Sea Flag.

On the same day, at 16:30 pm, at Praça dos Fuzileiros, in Almograve, the exhibition “30 anos Mar Limpo” will be inaugurated, followed by a Tertúlia with the participation of citizens who participated directly and indirectly in cleaning the beaches.
