Reinforced means for "muscled combat" against the fire in Monchique

Air and land assets continue to be strengthened

"A muscular attack is being made, more air resources have already been called in to reinforce" the combat to the fire that is raging in the town of Chã da Casinha, in the municipality of Monchique, revealed to Sul Informação José Gonçalo, president of the Monchique Parish Council and the local Volunteer Firefighters.

The fire has "two active fronts and is raging in an area of forest and eucalyptus," he told the Sul Informação Rolanda de Jesus, from the District Relief Operations Command (CDOS) of Faro.

“The area is difficult to access for land resources and the strong wind is also making it difficult to fight the flames. At the moment, we do not have any indication of houses in danger, nor of restricted roads”, he added.

Less than two hours after the start of this fire, according to the CDOS, ten aerial means have already been activated, namely “six heavy vehicles [airplanes], three light helicopters and one coordination helicopter”.

Also in the field, there are many operatives and means involved in fighting the flames. At the moment, there are already 185 members of corporations from all over the Algarve, supported by 59 vehicles and two crawlers.

Marta Martins, president of the Parish Council of Marmelete, told the Sul Informação that the fire "began in an area of bush and possibly eucalyptus", close to the area where the flames stopped last year.

José Gonçalo added, for his part, that “the fire started in an area close to the border between the parishes of Monchique and Marmelete, already close to São Teotónio, in the neighboring Alentejo municipality of Odemira”.
