Left Block Says Closing of Portimão Maternity Hospital is the Government's Fault

BE says that ARS/Algarve and CHUA are also not exempt from liability

The Left Block/Algarve considers that the Government is the "main responsible" for the closing of the Maternity Hospital in Portimão, between 7th and 11th June. Blocists lament the situation and blame the lack of investment in the National Health Service (SNS).

In a statement, the Left Block "regrets and protests vehemently for the closure of the Maternity Hospital in Portimão between the 7th and 11th of June."

The maternity hospital was closed due to the lack of pediatricians to ensure neonatal care in physical presence, which led to the pregnant women in labor being referred to the Hospital of Faro, except for emergent cases.

The blocists say that this situation “causes serious inconvenience to users, who have to travel dozens, or even more than a hundred kilometers. For example, from Aljezur or Vila do Bispo, to Faro».

For the Left Block, «the main responsible for this serious and unusual situation is the current Government, which has not yet made the necessary investments and the placement of pediatricians and other health technicians in the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA) and, very much. in particular, to provide for the needs of the Maternity Hospital in Portimão».

«The ARS/Algarve and the Board of Directors of CHUA are also not exempt from responsibility, as it is their responsibility to demand from the tutelage, the necessary resources for the normal functioning of the Maternity Hospital of Portimão, preventing it from closing and returning to close in the future», adds the Bloc.

The Left Block/Algarve reminds that «the degradation in terms of public health in the Hospital Center of the Algarve was very great during the times of the troika and under the PSD/CDS government, with the junction of the Lagos, Portimão and Hospitals Faro in a single hospital. The Maternity Hospital at Portimão Hospital did not end definitively only due to the mobilization of health professionals, users and populations».

However, «almost four years have already passed with this new PS Government and what it promised is still to be fulfilled: to remove the NHS from the degradation it was in and significantly improve it. This Government, like the previous one, is hostage to the zero deficit and the impositions from Brussels and the results are in sight – who pay are the users and the NHS», accuses the BE.

For this reason, Bloco de Esquerda/Algarve «requires the current government to provide, urgently, for the improvement of the NHS in the Algarve, with the necessary financial, human and technical resources, including for the normal functioning of the Maternity Hospital in Portimão».
