AMAL launches international public tender for concession of bus service

Drop in the price of passes has also already been approved.

AMAL – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve has just launched the international public tender for the concession of public service for road passenger transport.

It is planned to reinforce the public transport network in the region, as well as redefining existing routes and timetables.

In addition to this there are two major innovations: new lines will be created in places with more than 40 inhabitants without stopping 800 meters away and an Aerobus service that will allow connections between some municipalities in the Algarve and the Airport of Faro.

The value of the tender is around 85 million euros for a 5-year concession, covering 98 lines. In April, when the approval of lower pass value, Jorge Botelho, president of AMAL, had already told the Sul Informação that an international public tender would be launched.

AMAL, which manages the Algarve's road transport system, is the first CIM in the country to proceed with the transposition of this community directive.

This process does not represent any cost for the municipalities, as the service costs will all be concentrated on the competitors' side.

Proposals can be submitted until August 27th and AMAL will thus be able to enforce the community directive that establishes December 3rd as the deadline to complete the entire process. Until then, the current EVA and Frota Azul services will continue to operate.

For Jorge Botelho, president of the Algarve's Intermunicipal community, this project represents «a huge step forward for the region, with the creation of a more efficient and functional intermunicipal road network. A more environmentally friendly network with connections that better serve and facilitate people's daily lives. This is another AMAL commitment that is being fulfilled».

Associated with this service, a new graphic image of the public road passenger transport service in the Algarve will be presented.

On May 1st, remember, it was Pass price reduction approved of transport in the Algarve, for a maximum limit of 40 euros.

This process started in 2016, whichhen AMAL received “the portfolio” of transport in the region, and the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of the Algarve (PAMUS) was launched, the first phase of which consisted of mapping and evaluating transport in the region.
