Windy, the jay that guides us through the Vila do Bispo heritage app

Five routes make up this application

In this story there is Windy, a red-billed jay that «talks like a jay», and a lot (even a lot!) to know, from archaeological sites, paradisiacal beaches, natural landscapes and dinosaur footprints. A new mobile application wants to bring everyone to know the heritage of Vila do Bispo, in a playful way in which you can even collect objects to exchange them for prizes, in the style of the popular Pokemon Go game.

In total, “Bispo Go” offers five thematic routes (Vila do Bispo, Sagres, Castelejo, Megalítica and Boca do Rio), passing through 54 iconic locations in that county of Costa Vicentina.

You can visit the XNUMXth century Fountain of Vila do Bispo, the Fossils of Praia da Mareta, the dinosaur footprints in Salema, the Menhir of Milrei, the Roman Villa of Boca do Rio, the unavoidable Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe or, of course, the emblematic fortress of Sagres.

This is an innovative app that shows the paths to each location on the different routes (whether on foot, by car or by bicycle) and explains the stories of each location. All on a ride from Windy, the tour guide who is a real know-it-all.

“Bispo Go” was launched last Saturday, 18th of May, at the Cultural Center of Vila do Bispo, as part of the International Day of Museums, but the work is much older.

«The idea arose when we identified a gap that existed in our territory: we did not have reception tools to improve the visitation experience and the conditions under which people visited us», began by explaining archaeologist Ricardo Soares, from Câmara vilabispense, to the Sul Informação.

Having identified the flaw, it set out to do something “differentiating”. And so the “Bispo Go” emerged «which combines a digital application with a virtual gameplay experience to create habits and even addiction to the game, but with usefulness».

Is that, at each point, the user will be asked to answer a question. If you answer correctly, you will gain an object related to the territory visited.

Instead of the popular “puppets”, as in Pokemon, here the objects collected are identity marks of the territory, such as barnacles, a stele and even a windmill.

«We tried to go from the exoticism of games to the reality of our territory and then create the addiction to collecting, discovering and collecting stories from the county», explained Ricardo Soares.

And, be careful, whoever collects the objects is eligible to win prizes. «The goals to win each prize are defined, now we are working with the Tourism Office to see what the prizes will be. It can include pens, tickets for an event paid for in the county or even prizes of another order», the archaeologist told our newspaper.

Basically, what this application does can be called “patrimonial and environmental education”, aimed at both residents and tourists. «We are in the Algarve and we must always think about it, about tourism», said Ricardo Soares.

For these (and for all) there are, when you start using the application, a series of recommendations, even from an environmental point of view (how to not throw garbage on the floor), on how each person should behave in the places they visit.

Thus, getting to know the «landscape museum that is the municipality of Vila do Bispo» is now more fun and just a click away.

In the presentation of the app, Rute Silva, vice-president of the Vila do Bispo Chamber, said that this was “an important day for the council” for being an “innovative application, which shows the best we have”.

The "Bishop Go" is available at Play Store (Google) e AppStore (Apple) and, once downloaded, it can work offline, only needing a GPS connection.

Originally conceived by the Municipality of Vila do Bispo and developed by byAR, with the co-financing of the CRESC Algarve 2020 Operational Programme, this app has the contents in Portuguese and English.
