Maritime Police and ASAE seize more than a ton of oysters from farms in Tavira

Illegal debugger shut down by authorities

More than a ton of oysters from a nursery located in the waters of the Ria Formosa, in Quatro Águas, in Tavira, and which were inside an illegal sewage plant, was seized this Wednesday, the 8th, by the local Police Command Marítima de Tavira, in collaboration with the Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE).

​The apprehension, which took place at 10:00 am, took place as part of a policing action directed at local nurseries. The debugger was immediately shut down.

Five foreigners were also detected working in this purification plant, two of whom were of Moroccan nationality, who were legally in the country and with a work contract.

The other three men, of Nepalese nationality, had no employment contract as a foreign citizen in Portugal, one of them in a legal situation and the other two in an illegal situation in Portugal, having been notified by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) .

At the site, a water catchment network was also discovered, from the waters of the Ria Formosa, without proper licensing.

The Maritime Police adds that "the appropriate precautionary measures were applied and the means of proof were taken care of, with the purification plant being closed and the molluscs returned to their natural habitat, as they were alive."

In this action, participated five agents, a boat and two vehicles from the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Tavira and two inspectors from ASAE.
