Want to calculate your Ecological Footprint? On the Lagoa Chamber website just a click away, and the Algarve municipality was the first municipality in the south to install this calculator.
The Ecological Footprint (EP) seeks to answer the following question: how much is required from nature, from the regenerative capacity of the planet, or of a region, by a set of activities?
According to recent data, since the 1970s, humanity's Ecological Footprint has surpassed the Earth's biocapacity, and it is estimated that today it takes 1,7 planets Earth to provide the renewable resources and ecosystem services necessary for human consumption, during a single year.
The municipality of Lagoa is the first in the Algarve and the only one in the South to integrate, in this first phase, the “Ecological Footprint of Portuguese Municipalities” project.
The calculator is available on the website from the Municipality of Lagoa since the 13th of May. By accessing, anyone can answer a set of simple questions to find out about the environmental impact of their behavior.
This initiative is a pioneer in Portugal and is the result of the partnership established between the Municipality of Lagoa and the environmental association ZERO, University of Aveiro and the Global Footprint Network, within the scope of the Ecological Footprint of Portuguese Municipalities.
The project aims to generate knowledge and strengthen local capacity in the field of the environment, through the calculation and interpretation of vital data.
It proposes to prepare communities for complex environmental challenges. For this reason, alongside the installation of the calculator, a training session entitled “Citizens for the Reduction of the Ecological Footprint: Ambassadors of Lagoa” took place at the Lagoon Chamber premises.
