There is an Algarve teacher among the 10 finalists of the Global Teacher Prize Portugal

The winner will be known next Monday

Vítor Manuel Domingues Gonçalves, professor at the José Belchior Viegas Schools Group, in São Brás de Alportel, is one of the 10 finalists in the second edition of the Global Teacher Prize Portugal.

The winner, who will be known next Monday, May 6th, in a ceremony presented by the humorist Ricardo Araújo Pereira, at the Pavilion of Knowledge, in Lisbon, will receive a prize of 30 euros and will automatically enter the election process of the next global edition of the Global Teacher Prize.

The Global Teacher award aims to celebrate the outstanding work and extraordinary contribution of teachers to their profession.

This year's finalists, who represent all levels of education and across the country, are (alphabetical order):
>>Ana Mafalda Monteiro Marques Pires Lapa Gonçalves, teacher at Cidadela Elementary and Secondary School, in Cascais;
>>Angelizabel Sousa de Freitas, teacher at the Padre Manuel Álvares Basic and Secondary School, Ribeira Brava, Madeira;
>>David Alexandre Duarte Ferreira, professor at the Alcaides de Faria School Group, Barcelos;
>>Fernanda Alves, professor at the Externato das Escravas do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, in Porto;
>>Ilda Maria Rei Azevedo Lima, teacher at the D. Pedro IV Basic School, Mindelo, Vila do Conde;
>>José Manuel da Rocha Galvão, professor at the Vale da Amoreira School Group, Moita;
>>Luísa Cristina Valério da Silva Fernandes, teacher at the Carcavelos Schools Group;
>>Maria Inês Loureiro Rodrigues, teacher at the Group of Schools Nº1 in Gondomar;
>>Rui José Antunes de Cunha Simões Correia, teacher at the Santo Onofre Basic School/Raul Proença School Group, Caldas da Rainha;
>>Victor Manuel Domingues Gonçalves, professor at the José Belchior Viegas School Group, São Brás de Alportel.

The winner of the first edition was Jorge Teixeira, a high school science teacher in Chaves, and was even in the TOP50 of the world edition.

The world award was presented to Peter Tabichi, a Franciscan friar who is a science teacher at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village, rural Kenya.

This year's national jury has professor Álvaro Laborinho Lúcio as its honorary president and is chaired by Afonso Mendonça Reis (who is part of the international award jury).

The jury also includes Pedro Carneiro, representing the scientific community, Sara Rodi, representing the parents, João Brites, representing the students, and Eduardo de Sá, university professor and psychologist.
