Nurses at the Hospital de Lagos asked for help from the association of municipalities Terras do Infante to solve the problems facing the Medicine Service of this health unit, namely the shortage of professionals.

A delegation of nurses met this Thursday with Joaquina Matos, president of Terras do Infante and the Chamber of Lagos, and José Amarelinho, secretary of the association, to explain the difficulties they have been experiencing.

The main one is the «lack of professionals from the various groups, namely nurses», which, by the way, «was the main focus of a petition signed by the nursing team, sent on 4 April to the administration of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve and the Minister of Health», according to the Union of Portuguese Nurses.

“The medical nursing team should be made up of 47 nurses, according to the formula for calculating safe staffing, but it only has 33. Because 12 nurses are absent due to parental leave or leave, the work that should be done by the 47 it is being ensured by… 21«, denounce the union members.

Thus, at the center of the conversation, at yesterday's meeting, were themes such as "the decrease over the years in the number of professionals per shift, the admissions and replacement of insufficient long absences and the impact on the provision of care and on the accessibility of citizens" .

After the meeting, Joaquina Matos “expressed concern at the difficulties described by the three nurses from Lacobrigenses and made the commitment, measured with the other two mayors, to ask for meetings to CHUA, ARS Algarve and invite the Secretary of State for Health to travel the region. He also promised to take the document delivered by the nurses to the meetings of the Chamber and Municipal Assemblies of the three municipalities (Vila do Bispo, Aljezur and Lagos)».

The union, for its part, "requires the Ministries of Health and Finance to authorize the urgent admission of nursing professionals according to real needs."

“The Minister of Health has made the admission of nurses a priority to reduce the use of overtime work. The SEP demands the necessary hiring so that nurses can have the right to the rest days that are being withheld from them», conclude the union leaders.
