Festival returns to environmental sustainability measures

Dobro Sound System (Portugal) and DJ Burumtuma (Guinea-Bissau) are the names that close the poster of the MED Festival, presented last Saturday, May 25th, at the Cine-Teatro Louletano. This will be another edition in which the event bets on measures of environmental sustainability.

After the MED was distinguished by the “Sê-Verde” and received an Iberian Festival Award for the “Best Contribution to Sustainability” in the Iberian context, some new developments that will be introduced this year regarding the concern with the environment.

Compactor litter bins powered by solar energy, the replacement of a large part of the disposable plastic used in gastronomy taverns with biodegradable and compostable pieces and the placement of dispensers for the correct disposal of butts and chewing gum are measures that the organization will implement and have been applied for to the Environmental Fund of the Ministry of Environment.

These actions are thus added to the Ecological Cup, introduced in 2014, which allowed a drastic reduction of plastic in the enclosure, the Zero Waste Movement, the photovoltaic cells (powered by solar energy), placed in some catering spaces or made available of free and efficient water points.

As Carlos Carmo, councilor of the Municipality and director of the MED Festival underlined, «climate action and the circular economy are increasingly present in the planning of our Festival. We are on this path because there is no Planet B and we have to take care of it as best we know how».

Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, also underlined this concern, which is also taken to the MED's premises.

«We seek to innovate, in environmental issues, bringing something new to each edition. In recent years we have sought to distinguish ourselves due to circumstances of an environmental nature and we have been fortunate in that our work has been recognized», he considered.

When it comes to music, 80 hours of many different sounds, 60 bands from 22 countries from all over the world, 280 musicians and 10 stages (a new stage – Palco Chafariz – and a change in the concept of Palco Castelo) are some of the facts of what is expected in this edition.

«Loyal to our best tradition, we tried to choose artists with musical proposals capable of meeting the variety of tastes that the festivals of world music they always inspire”, said the mayor Vítor Aleixo.
