VRSA students take four projects to the National Science Exhibition

VRSA High School students also participate in the Young Scientists Contest

Students from Vila Real de Santo António Secondary School will participate in the National Science Exhibition, which will take place between the 30th of May and the 1st of June, at the Centro de Congressos da Alfândega do Porto.

In all, there are four projects presented by students from Vila Real, which are among the 97 presented by a total of 247 young scientists from 43 educational institutions across the country.

The projects in the Algarve are all in the area of social sciences. Students Bárbara Lopes Pereira and Miguel Gonçalves Lança, coordinated by Professor Paulo Silva, presented the project “The importance of indigenous forests in preventing fires”. The same teacher helped Rute Ferreira Correia and Luana Oliveira Matias to carry out the project “Analysis of the problem of waste in VRSA – the environmental separation carried out in the city's schools”.

“Euthanasia – The New Problem in the World” was the theme chosen by students Diana Matias Serrano and Márcia Botequilha Ferreira, who were supervised by Professor Luís Miguel Neves. The other project in Vila Real is called “All for the Environment – The Problematic of Plastics”, it was carried out by Diogo Néné Nunes and Simão Campos Domingues and coordinated by Paulo Silva.

The National Science Exhibition, considered one of the largest at European level, includes the Young Scientists Contest, which «intends to promote the realization of innovative scientific projects in schools, encourage qualified entrepreneurship and favor the economic use of scientific and technological knowledge». according to the Fundação da Juventude, which co-organizes the event with Ciência Viva and Câmara do Porto.

"The 247 young people, coordinated by 67 participating teachers, compete for a global amount of 50 thousand euros in prizes, distributed between monetary prizes (10 thousand) and international participation (40 thousand)", he adds.

It is from this science meeting that the Youth Foundation itself, as promoter of the Young Scientists Contest and the National Science Exhibition, selects projects intended to represent Portugal in European and international science competitions, such as the European Final, organized by the European Commission, ISEF in the USA, CASTIC in Macau, Expo-Science in Luxembourg, Zientzia Azoka in Spain, ESI in the United Arab Emirates, Research Week in the Swiss Alps and MOSTRATEC in Brazil.

The evaluation and selection of the works is the responsibility of a jury coordinated by Ciência Viva, «which includes professors, researchers and renowned personalities from the different scientific areas involved».
