Algarve Sevens takes rugby elite back to Vila Real de Santo António

In total, the event will bring together more than 60 national and foreign teams

The second edition of the Algarve Sevens tournament will take, on the 8th and 9th of June, the rugby elite to Vila Real de Santo António.

This year's edition has the confirmed presence of several national teams such as Italy, Romania, Hong Kong, France and Portugal, as well as prestigious professional teams such as Samurai, Seventise (France), French Fijians, 7Fantastics and Susies , champions of 2018.

In total, the event will bring together more than 60 national and international teams, involving 1000 Rugby Sevens players from around the world, in the Municipal Stadium and Sports Complex of VRSA.

To increase the level of refereeing in the tournaments, the organization will organize, during the competition, a level II and III coaching course and the presence of four referees from the World Tour is expected.

The event comprises the main competition – Elite Men, held at the Municipal Stadium of Vila Real de Santo António – and the following competitions: Open Men, Open Women, Veterans (format 13-a-side), Men's Under-18 and Touch Rugby, to play at the VRSA Sports Complex.

«The first edition of Algarve 7's was important for our local economy. We are very pleased to host the tournament in Vila Real de Santo António and we hope that this partnership will be maintained», says Conceição Cabrita, Mayor of VRSA.

«All the conditions for a successful journey are met. Vila Real de Santo António is a land that knows how to welcome and we are waiting for you all on the 8th and 9th of June”, says the mayor.

For José Diogo Trigo de Moraes, director of Sports Ventures, «the support of the City Council has been essential from day one. This year, the Portuguese Rugby Federation is a key partner as well. I think that all the ingredients for the success of the initiative are together”.

«The Elite Tournament is at a very high level. Our aim is for Algarve 7's to be an authentic Rugby Festival. Admission is free and we want Vila Real de Santo António to be full on the 8th and 9th of June to attend this great event», he continues.

The organization also announced, for 2019, an agreement with GLS, a transport and logistics company, for the naming sponsor of the event, which was renamed GLS Algarve 7's.
