Cape Verde is the «Highlighted Place» of the seminar that, on the 12th of April, in Vila do Bispo, will launch the second edition of the Cultural Week Places of Globalization, which will then take place in May, in five municipalities of the Western Algarve: Lagos, Vila do Bispo, Aljezur, Silves and Monchique.

Next Friday's seminar includes presentations by guest speakers, during the morning, a public presentation of the May Cultural Week program, as well as a «moment of immersion in Cape Verdean culture».

And what moment will this be? With the presence of Cape Verdean associations, life stories and cultural projects will be presented. Afterwards, Darlene Barreto, daughter of Cape Verdean musician Orlando Pantera, will explain why «Batuko is in fashion». And the explanation goes through the live performance of a group of very lively batucadeiras, with their rhythms pulling seminar participants to a little dance floor.

But let's go back to the beginning. The seminar, which will take place at the Cultural Center of Vila do Bispo, starts at 9:30 am, with the opening session. At 10:00 am, the first panel will begin, on the generic theme “Places of Globalization – affirmation of its values, historical foundations and its actuality”.

Moderated by Pedro Cantinho Pereira, from Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes (ISMAT), the first speaker will be Maria Manuel Torrão, from the History Center of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon, who will speak on «The Algarve, the Atlantic and the islands of Cape Verde – common paths on the path to globalization».

This is followed by historian Rui Loureiro, from ISMAT, who will present a paper on «Fernão de Magalhães, the Atlantic and Globalization», ending this first panel with Ana Samira Silva, from the Cape Verde Cultural Heritage Institute, who will reflect on the importance of places and territories such as the Old Town, classified as World Heritage.

The second panel, which will be moderated by a journalist Elisabete Rodrigues, will take place under the motto of “Cultural Heritage, Oceans, Cooperation and Tourism”.

Artur de Jesus, senior technician at the Vila do Bispo Council, will present the project «Odyssea Blue Heritage – the Cultural Maritime Itinerary in Vila do Bispo», followed by Ana Catarina Garcia, from the CHAM of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, who will address the theme «Memory, preservation and literacy of the oceans – contributions of archeology to Maritime History and the CONCHA project».

Closing this second panel, Cláudia Henriques, from the Superior School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism of the University of Algarve, will talk about «What is the value of a World Heritage Classification for a tourist destination?».

In the afternoon, starting at 15 pm, archaeologist Rui Parreira, from the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, will address the theme «the Cultural Heritage of the Barlavento Algarve and its European and Universal Value», linking the issue of the Sagres Promontory being the European Heritage Label, with the inclusion of the “Places of Globalization” application in the UNESCO Indicative List.

And the afternoon will end, as you already know, with an immersion in Cape Verde's culture, especially in its music. There will thus be a presentation of Orlando Pantera's legacy, which will be highlighted during the month of May, during the Cultural Week, as well as the participation of elements from Orchestra of Batukadeiras of Portugal of the Association of Cape Verdean Women in the Diaspora in Portugal. An orchestra that has even recorded with Madonna.

«After a little more formal moment, in the morning, with the presentation of the guest speakers' communications, this will be a more festive moment, to whet your appetite for the programming that we will present in May, in the five Algarve municipalities involved in this project », explained Sónia Felicidade, from the Vicentina association, speaking to the Sul Informação.

"A candidacy Places of Globalization UNESCO heritage involves Portugal, Spain, Morocco and Cape Verde. But it is with this last country that we have the strongest ties, first of all because of the language that unites us. There is a very strong triangle here, between the Barlavento Algarvio, Azores and Madeira, and also Cape Verde. These are ties that we are very interested in exploring, not only from the point of view of culture and heritage, but even from an economic point of view, in terms of cultural tourism," he added.

Registration for what promises to be an intense journey of knowledge and sharing is now open, can be done by clicking here.

The Cultural Week Lugares de Globalização is the result of a partnership formed by Vicentina – Association for the Development of the Southwest, Regional Directorate for Culture of the Algarve, the Municipalities of Lagos, Vila do Bispo, Aljezur, Monchique, Silves and the Algarve Tourism Region and the LAC Cultural Association.

This will be the second edition of an event that will once again present a cultural program that will pass through Lagos, Vila do Bispo, Aljezur, Silves and Monchique, the five municipalities in the Algarve that make up the “Places of Globalization” application, included in the indicative list of UNESCO properties.

An edition that will have Cape Verde as the Spotlight, as this is one of the countries that are part of the “places divided into five countries – Portugal, Spain, Cape Verde, Morocco and Mauritania” that “are part of the associated universal memory to the imagination of important historical changes”, and which “as a whole represent a unique heritage in the world context as milestones of the beginning of what would become a new era for Humanity”.
