“Revitalize Monchique” starts in May with volunteer work on Via Algarviana

Action marks the beginning of the recovery of signage in the sectors affected by the fire

A volunteer action to recover the Via Algarviana signage in the municipality of Monchique is scheduled for next Friday, May 3rd, from 8:30 am.

The intervention will take place between Picota and Foz dos Barreiros, which comprises the first 12 kilometers to be recovered in sector 10 of the Via Algarviana, affected by the fire that broke out in that area and which extended to the municipality of Silves last summer.

The activity, which will consist of painting brands, intends to involve the population in this recovery, for logistical reasons, up to a limit of 25 volunteers.

Those interested in participating can do so by prior registration, through form available on the Via Algarviana website, and request more information to [email protected].

This volunteer action marks the start of the project “Revitalize Monchique – tourism as a catalyst”, resulting from a partnership with the Algarve Tourism Region, the Algarve Tourism Association, the Almargem Association and the Municipality of Monchique.

The protocol, signed between the various entities earlier this year, aims at a set of actions to revitalize the municipality of Monchique, severely hit by the fire of 2018, creating attractive conditions for the development of tourist activity, with a special focus on Nature Tourism.

Supported with a total funding of 479.840 euros, from Turismo de Portugal, under the RegFin programme, the project “Revitalize Monchique – tourism as a catalyst” is promoted by the Algarve Tourism Association, Almargem – Association for the Defense of the Algarve's Cultural and Environmental Heritage and the Municipality of Monchique.

The overall objective of the project is to strengthen the tourist attractiveness of Monchique in terms of nature, cultural and creative tourism, reinforcing its offer in terms of walking routes and creative experiences, involving local agents and valuing endogenous resources.

The GR13 – E4 “Via Algarviana” connects Alcoutim to Cabo de São Vicente, in an extension of about 300 kilometers, covering the Low Density territories.

The Via Algarviana, at this moment, in addition to its main axis, presents a large network of complementary products, thus encompassing 13 municipalities in the Algarve (Albufeira, Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé, Monchique, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel , Silves, Tavira and Vila do Bispo).

The Via Algarviana project has contributed to the development of a network of pedestrian paths in the Algarve, properly signposted and publicized, and has carried out the mission of promoting the natural and cultural heritage of the Algarve interior, with the promotion of accommodation and catering services , taking more and more visitors to the “Via Algarviana Territory” located in the interior of the Algarve.
