New take-off procedure reduces aircraft noise in Quarteira

New procedure must be completed by the end of the year

New take-off procedures, which are being designed by NAV, will alleviate the noise caused by planes taking off from the airport in Faro, in the areas of Quarteira and Vilamoura.

The news was revealed yesterday by Fernando Dutra, responsible for the airport's control tower, in a clarification session, promoted by the National Civil Aviation Authority, which took place in Faro.

These new procedures, whose elaboration should be concluded by the end of the year, foresee that aircraft taking off in the west direction will extend the turning point, which is currently taking place off Quarteira, in five kilometers. This leads to aircraft crossing the coastline later, at a higher altitude, therefore with less noise.

“This extension to the sea of the ascent could reduce noise levels over Quarteira. All procedures are studied. We will have to design these routes to the various destinations and this takes some time. We think this will be good news for the population of Quarteira”, said Luís Miguel Ribeiro, president of ANAC, at the session.
