Lagos is already part of the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities. The membership was formalized last Friday, March 29, in Lamego, by the Intermunicipal Assembly of this association.

The decision to proceed with this process had the objective, on the part of the Municipality of Lagos, of «promoting the lacobrigense wine production, increasing the associative spirit, networking in the sector and the economy around wine», explains the municipality.

The membership proposal was consolidated after holding a meeting with wine producers, based in the municipality of Lagos and registered with the Algarve Wine Commission with Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) and Controlled Denomination of Origin (DOC) wines.

During this meeting, the interest of the producers present in actively participating in the actions to be developed was demonstrated, with a mutual commitment to organize a wine tasting, as well as other initiatives that contribute to the appreciation of the wine produced in Lagos, namely actions of awareness among distributors.

For Maria Joaquina Matos, mayor of Lagos, «wine and gastronomy, in addition to their importance as economic sectors and cultural identity factors, also allow the tourism sector to be leveraged».

According to the mayor, this adhesion will also allow to enhance the added value that already represents the twinning of Lagos with Torres Vedras, which received, together with Alenquer, the title of European City of Wine 2018.

The Associação Municipalities Portugueses do Vinho currently has 79 associated municipalities, including three in the Algarve (Albufeira, Lagoa and Silves), to which the Municipality of Lagos now joins.
