BE wants to hear precarious UAlg investigators in the Assembly of the Republic

Blocists requested the presence of researchers in the Committee on Education and Science of the Assembly of the Republic

The Parliamentary Group of the Left Block (BE) wants to hear from the precarious researchers of the University of Algarve and has already requested their presence in the Assembly of the Republic, for a hearing in the Committee on Education and Science.

The University of Algarve asked for a reassessment of the requests for the integration of 19 scientific researchers, who worked at the institution under grants or fixed-term contracts, after having initially agreed to hire them.

The Bipartite Evaluation Committee for Science, Technology and Higher Education (CAB-CTES) for the University of Algarve accepted the request made by the Algarve Academy and decided not to integrate 16 of these 19 scientists.

In other words, only three researchers will be hired on a permanent basis, despite the fact that «the vast majority of these workers have been working at the University of Algarve for over 6 years and, in many cases, for over 10 years», according to BE.

«In turn, with regard to general careers, following the notification by the CAB of the opinions in favor of the regularization of precarious relationships, the dean of the University of Algarve informed the 51 workers (16 contracted for an uncertain term and with covenants and 35 Science and Technology Management Scholars and Research Scholars – BI) that the Institution would not have the financial capacity to take on the opening of the tenders since the budget required for hiring the 35 scholarship holders who received approval would not be included in the budget», he added the same party.

Of the general careers, “16 contracts for an uncertain term would already be directly financed by the institution's general budget. For these 16, which would already be included in the Institution's “accounts”, the dean of the University of Algarve undertook to open competitions in the 1st quarter of 2019. But these were not published within the deadline”.

“To the others, he informed that “the tenders will start to be opened from April, in phases, starting with those that are being financed by general revenues”, although without any forecast of deadlines to be met”, highlighted the BE.

BE states that "these attitudes of the University of the Algarve's rector represent a clear and continued attitude of boycott and lack of responsibility in the face of the regularization of the employment situation of these dozens of scholarship holders, researchers and contracted for an uncertain term".

«For the Left Block, the position taken by the Rector of the University of Algarve is incomprehensible, nor is it possible to find any valid justification. The way in which the University of Algarve is treating the majority of workers who intend to regularize their employment relationships through this process is, if confirmed, a disrespect for the law and for the workers in question”, concluded the BE.
