Algar buys new vehicles to face the increase in recycling

In the first two months of the year, waste placed in recycling bins increased 22%

Algar purchased seven new selective collection vehicles, which will help to deal with the increase in recyclable packaging waste deposited at ecopoints in the Algarve. The new trucks will increase the collection capacity by 32%.

According to the company, «the values for January and February this year show an increase of 22% in the quantities of recyclables collected, in the three flows of the ecopoint, when compared to the same period of the previous year».

The strong investment made in 2018 contributed to this result, says Algar, by placing around 750 new recycling bins on public roads. In 2019, another 350 new recycling bins will be installed.

According to the company, "more than 3900 ecopoints will be available", and the objective is to guarantee the ratio of one ecopoint for every 126 inhabitants.

Investment in waste collection vehicles amounts to 1,2 million euros, being 85% co-financed by the Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources (POSEUR), Portugal 2020 and the European Union, through the Cohesion Fund.

According to Algar, in this way, «conditions were created to ensure the needs of the Selective Collection Activity, and the company can now count on a fleet of 29 vehicles».

The new vehicles are equipped "with the latest engine technology within the scope of compliance with the EURO VI standard (gas emissions)", concludes the company.
