Pedestrian routes show «another Olhão» from May onwards

Olhão took advantage of BTL to launch a new tourist product

To make known “another Olhão”, far from the Ria, but “rich in heritage”. The “Aqui So Perto” project will be launched “at the end of May, beginning of June” and includes six walking routes through the interior of the municipality.

The Municipality took advantage of the presence on the Lisbon Tourism Exchange (BTL) to present, last Thursday, March 14th, this new project.

The objective is to provide those who visit Olhão with a new experience, awakening interest in the cultural and natural heritage of the county.

Hugo Oliveira, director of the Municipal Museum, explained to journalists that "the project will be on the ground, in principle, at the end of May, beginning of June".

For now, the routes are not ready yet, but the contours of some are already known. One of the trails is the Caminho dos Romanos and Cerro da Cabeça (Moncarapacho/Fuzeta) and it goes through some sections of Roman pavement, dating from the XNUMXst and XNUMXnd centuries.

The route passes through «Cerro da Cabeça, stage of the most intriguing Algarve legends and an important landmark of the Algarve's Barrocal, due to its karst formations, which provide a unique environment for observing a large number of animal species, making it a geomonument of relief in the Algarve context”, according to the promoters.

The Caminho da Água, on the other hand, runs through Pechão and is a route that brings to light the importance of this natural resource.

The route runs 'parallel to the Belamandil river, the main source of supply in the past. Along the trail, we can see some sugar mills, such as the Fonte Velha, the Fonte Nova, the Poço do Lagar, or the Poço da Amendoeira», says the municipality of Olhão.

To publicize this project, the City Council and the Municipal Museum will make available a «catalogue, with all itineraries, available in four languages, which can be collected in key places, such as the Museum, City Council and Parish Councils, free of charge» , said Hugo Oliveira, in the presentation of the project.

«The main objective is to show another side of Olhão and the municipality, drawing attention to another type of heritage», he also considered.

«It is said of Olhão that it is a land that lies on the sea, hugging the barrocal. In fact, our county is fertile with regard to the richness of the landscapes, ranging from the barrocal to the coast, passing, let us not forget, through the mountains, which gives us a unique multiplicity in terms of landscape diversity and biodiversity", he stressed, in turn, António Pina, mayor of Olhão, on the Lisbon Tourism Exchange.

«It is this wealth that we want to share with those who visit us, inviting them to discover that the beauty and attractions of the county are not limited to the coastal strip», concluded the mayor.

The Municipality of Olhão also took advantage of the largest national tourism event to present to professionals and the general public the poster for the 2019 edition of the Seafood Festival, which this year runs from 9 to 14 August.

Matias Damásio, with Aurea and HMB as guests, a Tribute to the Queen, Paula Fernandes, Ludmilla and Resistance are confirmed names.
