The Municipality of Olhão and the company Água de Monchique are in solidarity with the victims of Cyclone Idai, in Mozambique, and will help them with donations in cash and in kind.

The municipality of Olho has launched a campaign to collect the goods considered the most priority for the populations of the province of Beira, which will last until the 31st of March.

Anyone who wants to make a contribution can deliver food products, including canned goods with an extended shelf life, personal hygiene products and clothing at the Municipal Fire Department of Olhão.

Água de Monchique, in turn, made a donation of 5 thousand euros to the Portuguese Red Cross (CVP), on the occasion of World Water Day, which was marked today.

“We chose the day when we are celebrating water, this natural resource essential to life, to make the whole community aware of the opportunity we all have to, with individual contribution, help to alleviate this catastrophe. But we also want to leave to all affected people a message of hope for the future and for the rebirth of these communities”, said Vítor Hugo Gonçalves, executive director of Sociedade da Água de Monchique

The company “invites the entire community to mark this day, demonstrating its solidarity with the communities affected by the passage of Cyclone Idai”.

One of the ways to help, emphasized Águas de Monchique, is by donating funds to the CVP solidarity campaign, on the website where the necessary information can be found for those who want to support.

The passage of Cyclone Idai through the center of Mozambique and the floods that followed left a trail of destruction and have already caused, since Thursday, the 14th, more than 200 deaths.

“The cyclone was once considered the worst natural disaster in the southern hemisphere. With winds around 200 kilometers, it destroyed houses and uprooted trees. It also left behind gigantic areas completely flooded in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi”, recalled the Chamber of Olhão.
