Lagos will take on new skills in the area of culture in 2019

In contrast, Lagos refused to take on new assignments in the field of animal health and protection and food safety

The Câmara de Lagos is available to receive, as early as 2019, competences in the field of culture, within the scope of the decentralization process being promoted by the Government.

The new attributions in the area of animal health and protection and food safety will not be assumed by this authority, for now.

The assumption of new competences in the area of culture, approved yesterday at the Chamber Meeting, means that the Lacobrigense autarchy «becomes responsible for the management, valorization and conservation of properties that, being classified, are considered to be local, as well as museums which are not called national museums'.

"The municipality will also exercise the prior control and supervision of artistic performances", added the City Council of Lagos.

At the meeting where this proposal was approved, Joaquina Matos, Mayor of Lagos, reaffirmed “his agreement in principle with the decentralization project, but also stressed the need to prepare services to conveniently accommodate the new areas of responsibility, conditions that exist in the area of culture, given the ongoing activities, namely the rehabilitation of the headquarters of the Dr. José Formosinho Municipal Museum, and the reinforcement of human resources that took place».

Thus, new assignments regarding animal health and protection and food safety will not be accepted for the time being.

The proposal now goes on for consideration and deliberation by the Municipal Assembly, «which will have to meet extraordinarily, given the deadlines for communication to the General Directorate of Local Authorities, which end on April 1st for these two specific diplomas».

Soon, the Câmara de Lagos will have to deliberate on the diplomas related to the areas of Education, whose communication period ends on April 30, and Health, which awaits the publication of the order with the amounts of the Fund for Decentralization Financing.

Municipalities had already deliberated on the acceptance of new competences, in January. At that time, Lagos only accepted the assignments provided for in one of the nine diplomas, those relating to unused public real estate assets, rejecting the others.
