Conferences are once again a great stage for debate on municipalities in the Arade Basin

The Jornadas do Arade will once again bring together at the same table, from the 8th to the 10th of March, regional entities and specialists from different areas for a great debate on the themes that dominate the present and project the future of the four municipalities of the Arade Basin: Portimão, Lagoa, Silves and Monchique.

This edition will begin by giving a voice to the youngest, with the participation of groups of students from the Poeta António Aleixo Schools Group and the Monchique Schools Group in the plenary sessions to be held on Friday morning, challenged to evaluate, in around thematic axes, the situation in their region and considering possible future solutions.

At 15:00 pm, the program open to the public will begin, with a round table under the motto “Promotion of sport at local level – From Training to High Performance”.

From school sports to high performance, through adapted sports and the role of local authorities in promoting healthy lifestyle habits in the community, this is a topic that is on the agenda, in a year in which Portimão is the European City of Sport.

This is followed by the opening conference of the Jornadas, in charge of Francisco Serra, president of CCDR Algarve, who will make known how community funds, in particular through the CRESC Algarve 2020 programme, have contributed to the development of the region.

The controversy surrounding the application of the tourist tax in the Algarve ends the afternoon's work. Jorge Botelho, president of AMAL's Intermunicipal Council, and Elidérico Viegas, president of AHETA, will exchange arguments about the opportunities but also the eventual vicissitudes of applying this rate in the region.

At the end of the first day of work, an “Algarve de Honra” will be served, with the support of the Algarve Wine Commission, and the book “One tie to the sea and another to the land” will be presented. New Christians in the Algarve (1558-1650)” by Carla Vieira.

You will then dive into the underwater heritage. Archaeologist Cristóvão Fonseca will show what heritage the waters of the Arade hide, by sharing the ongoing project “A millenary port complex in the Barlavento Algarvio: the archeology of the Arade river estuary”, developed by a team of researchers from CHAM – Center for Humanities of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in partnership with the Museu de Portimão.

The Saturday morning program will be completed with a debate around the controversy “40 years of NHS in the Algarve: What paths for the future?”, with the participation of Paulo Morgado, chairman of the Board of Directors of ARS Algarve, and Ulisses Brito, President of the Regional Council of the Sub-region of Faro of the Medical Association.

The work on Saturday afternoon begins with the round table “Events and cultural initiatives of a regional dimension – What is the Real Impact?”, in which inter-municipal projects such as Rota do Petisco, 365 Algarve, Via Algarviana and Route of the Mediterranean Diet, will be discussed as examples to replicate the exchange of synergies and promotion of the region.

“What changed/will change after the August 2018 fire?” will be the question that will be on the table, at a time when planning for the next summer season begins.

To discuss this issue, Rui André, Mayor of Monchique, and Emílio Vidigal, President of the Barlavento Algarvio Forest Producers Association will be present.

The work of the III Jornadas do Arade will end at the end of Saturday afternoon, with a conference on “Portimão European City of Sport” with the participation of Teresa Mendes, councilor of the Portimão City Council.
