The Loulé Carnival kicked off this Sunday, March 3rd, with thousands of people watching the corso, on a crowded José da Costa Mealha Avenue. In a year in which the theme is “Circus Selfie”, even dogs landed for photography…
The 14 floats once again surprised and enchanted the public, who were also toasting the first day of Carnival with radiant sun and high temperatures.
Satire – above all political but also social or sporting – is once again in the spotlight at this Carnival, as a vehicle to break down national and international news in a fun way and with a good dose of humour.
“The hugs of Marcelo” could not be missing from this parade since it was the President of the Republic who popularized the selfies and, in that sense, the caricature of the Head of State alongside a truck driver heading to Porto, on a lightning trip from Invicta to Loulé to participating in Carnival was one of the most popular satires.
But in a region with lots of British tourists, the Brexit he did not escape this circus: on the one hand, Theresa May, the face of the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union, and on the other Angela Merkel, the central figure of that same Europe.
In the midst of clowns, jugglers, trapeze artists, the oldest corsican in the country presented, this Sunday afternoon, its audience with other circus performers well-known ones, such as Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro or, in the sports area, the presidents of the three main Portuguese clubs, in a parody of current football and all the media cases that have inflamed the sport-king in Portugal.
This year, one of the novelties is the use of reusable ecological cups, made of pressed cardboard. According to the City Council of Loulé, «on this first day of the parade, the reduction of plastic throughout the venue was already visible».
If you haven't been to Carnival yet, know that you still have two more opportunities. Today, March 4th, the corsican goes out at 15 pm and, this Tuesday, the 00th, a new flood is expected on Avenida José da Costa Mealha at the end of the revelry.
However, also today, starting at 22 pm, the “Palácio” do Nera, in the Industrial Zone, receives another Gala, with the theme “Grandioso Circus Lauroé”.
