Three hundred thousand euros bring more quality to Hospital de São Camilo in Portimão

The inaugurated area brings 12 new offices to the city of Portimão, two new waiting rooms, a new OS

The Hospital de São Camilo, successor to the Hospital da Misericórdia de Portimão, whose facilities also served the community of Portimão and the entire western Algarve through the Hospital Distrital de Portimão, has already opened its new outpatient wing.

With a total investment of over 300 thousand euros, the inaugurated area brings 12 new offices to the city of Portimão, including individual areas for ophthalmology, otolaryngology, cardiology, pediatrics, orthopedics, two new waiting rooms, a new OR and a set of improvements in the permanent service area.

All areas of the old hospital were reactivated and placed at the service of the population, in a process that, according to João Amado, physician, clinical director and manager of Hospital de São Camilo, “does not end now, but rather, marks the end of a cycle that began in 1999 through the return of a ghost building that now comes to life. Today we are stronger, more competent, but also more solidary».

The ceremony had the blessing of the facilities by Father Mário Sousa, who highlighted the importance of that wing of external consultations, not only for Portimão, but also for Barlavento.

The prior asked the leaders and professionals to put “increasingly love in their actions and procedures”.

The blessing and inauguration of the facilities was attended by several institutional representatives, including Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, Rui André, mayor of Monchique, Vítor Rodrigues, president of the Municipal Assembly of Silves, Patrícia Seromenho, provider of the Misericórdia of Albufeira and president of the Regional Secretariat of the União das Misericórdias Portuguesas.

Also present were the providers of the Misericórdias of Monchique, Alvor and Vila do Bispo, as well as Mahomede Americano, clinical director of CHUA, and João Bacalhau, president of the administration of the HPA group, among many other personalities and health professionals.

In the initial intervention, Isilda Gomes highlighted the importance of the Misericórdia of Portimão and of the Hospital de São Camilo in providing care to the people of Portimão.

According to the mayor, the Hospital de São Camilo can provide populations, in addition to the CHUA, and without replacing it, better and more accessible health care.

He also congratulated those responsible for this health unit, expressing his support and that of the municipality he presides over for the implementation of the new projects.

In his speech, João Amado gave a brief historical review of the life of this hospital unit and its connection to the patron Camilo de Lellis, "from whom he takes the example of valuing, respecting and humanizing the care provided to patients".

On the role of the social and private sectors, he added that "they are partners of the NHS, completing it and contributing to giving everyone access to health care that everyone, without exceptions or discrimination, deserves."
