Olhão will offer 1500 tablets to students in the municipality

Tablets will be given to 4th, 7th and 10th grade students

The City Council of Olhão will offer, in the next school year, around 1500 tablets to the municipality's students. In the coming days, the municipality will launch a public tender for the acquisition of equipment, which will cost around 280 thousand euros.

This investment, according to the Chamber, “a pioneer in the country” comes “in the wake of the educational policy that the municipality has been implementing, which aims to modernize the school, facilities and equipment, but also the teaching methods and pedagogical resources to disposition of students'.

«This measure comes in the way of the offer of school manuals that we have been doing in previous years. Since in the 2019-2020 school year, the Central State will already offer all the manuals, we decided to channel these funds to the offer of tablets to students», explains António Pina, mayor.

This investment will be repeated over three academic years, “so that, in the end, all students from the 4th to the 12th grade will have this resource offered by the Municipality. The 4th, 7th and 10th years will be considered annually”, explains the municipality.

This equipment, adds the Chamber of Olhão, will also «complement the recent investment carried out by the municipality, in order to equip all 118 pre-school and 1st cycle classrooms of the municipality's public network with projection systems, computers, video projectors and respective porcelain screens or boards».

According to the Chamber, this allows “the integration in the classroom context of educational practices that are more integrative and motivating for students, namely through the introduction of tablets in the classroom context”.

With the purchase of tablets, the municipality also intends to «minimize the effects on students' health of transporting heavy backpacks, since virtual school manuals can be installed on tablets, relieving their weight».

«This is another step we take towards motivating our students towards a more dynamic, interactive and motivating learning, meeting their interests. On the other hand, it is a way of trying to respond to the needs of teachers, who daily have to overcome pedagogical, organizational, but also social difficulties», concludes António Miguel Pina.
