Marcelo attends the 1969 earthquake session in Sagres and visits Lagos

Tomorrow, February 28th, celebrates 50 years of the violent earthquake of 1969

The President of the Republic will participate this Thursday, February 28, at 11:30 am, in a session on the theme “The Seismic Risk” in Portugal, to be held at the Fortaleza de Sagres. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will also take advantage of his trip to the Algarve to visit Lagos.

According to the Chamber of Lagos, the Head of State will participate in a lunch at the invitation of Maria Joaquina Matos, president of the municipality.

It is already this Thursday that the earthquake of February 28, 1969 will be remembered. The program to commemorate this historic date takes place in Lagos, with an initiative under the theme “Seismic Risk in Portugal”, being preceded by the inaugural session in Sagres.

These initiatives take place within the scope of the Evocation of the 50 years of the earthquake of February 28, 1969, organized by the Portuguese Society of Seismic Engineering (SPES) and by the Portuguese Association of Meteorology and Geophysics (APMG), with the collaboration and involvement of the entities locals and hostesses.

Raising the population's awareness of the existence of seismic risk, involving those who have responsibilities in the study, definition and implementation of measures to ensure the minimization of this risk, is the objective of the public session that will take place in Lagos, in the Auditorium of the Paços do Concelho Século building XXI, tomorrow, from 15:30.

An exhibition on this theme will also be on display at the site, which can be appreciated by all who are curious to know a little more about these phenomena or to deepen existing knowledge.
