Government launches campaign to eliminate dating violence

The Government took advantage of Valentine's Day, which is celebrated this Thursday, February 14, to launch a new campaign to eliminate dating violence.

Rosa Monteiro, Secretary of State for the City and Equality, promotes the #NamorarMemeASério campaign, which aims to identify in a concrete way some of the behaviors that are clear signs of situations of violence, whether physical, psychological or sexual.

The campaign's faces are public figures recognized by the younger public, such as Alice Trewinnard, Cátia Domingues, Carolina Torres, Diogo Faro, Maria Seixas Correia, Mariana Monteiro.

The 2019 National Study on Violence in Dating, carried out by the Alternative and Response Women's Union (UMAR), which has the support of the Secretary of State for Citizenship and Equality, shows that 58% of young people who are in love or have already been in love report having already suffered at least one form of violence by a current or ex-partner or partner.

Already 67% of young people consider some of the behavior of violence natural. "The study points to the high prevalence and legitimization of specific forms of violence such as psychological violence, that exerted through social networks or control attitudes (on clothing, social habits or other behaviors)", explains the office of the secretary of State.

This campaign is launched together with Associação Corações Com Coroa (CCC), Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV), Association for Family Planning (APF), Grail – Association of Social and Cultural Character, HeForShe Portugal, Democratic Movement of Women (MDM), Plan I Association and Alternative and Response Women's Union (UMAR).

These are joined by the Academic Associations of Coimbra, the University of Algarve, the University of Aveiro, the University of Beira Interior, the University of Évora, the University of Minho and the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, as well. such as the National Association of Medical Students and the Academic Federations of University Sports in Lisbon and Porto.

The list is completed by the National Federation of Nursing Student Associations, the National Federation of Polytechnic Higher Education Student Associations and the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality (CIG).
