«Viagem» de Magalhães is the motto of DiVaM, which has already opened the application period

This year, there is a maximum ceiling of 55 euros for around four dozen activities in the Algarve's monuments

«The Journey» is the theme of this year's program of DiVaM – Dynamization and Valorization of Monuments, whose candidacies are open until February 22, according to the Regional Directorate of Culture.

In 2019, the 500th anniversary of the first planetary circumnavigation voyage of Fernão de Magalhães, a Portuguese navigator who planned and commanded, for most of its extension, the maritime expedition that definitively demonstrated the sphericity of the earth, is celebrated.

With the theme of the Great Journey, which this year sets the tone for the DiVaM program, «the intention is to promote the demand for new paths, tangible or imaginary, in a constant search for evasion, for reinterpretation, that allow us to discover new places, new utopias, encounters or reencounters, with the other or with ourselves», adds the Regional Directorate.

This year, the amount to be made available to support the DiVaM 2019 program has a maximum ceiling of 55 thousand euros.

Around four dozen cultural activities will be integrated, 11 of which will be in the Fortress of Sagres and many others in the Roman Ruins of Milreu and in the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe (Raposeira, Vila do Bispo). There will also be activities in the Castles of Aljezur (2), Paderne (2) and Loulé (1), as well as in the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, in Portimão (2).

The DiVaM program intends to contribute to highlighting the importance of local communities in valuing cultural heritage, meeting the principles of the “Convention of Faro”, as it tries to promote cultural heritage as a factor of approximation, dialogue, social cohesion and an increasingly inclusive citizenship.

The "Convention of Faro”, signed in 2005, in the then European Capital of Culture, presents “a more “holistic” vision of heritage, combining material and immaterial heritage, but also the values, meanings, uses and uses of that heritage by society. Heritage is seen as a process; a continuous process of creation, construction, use and modification of heritage; a process that involves communities, in which their values, aspirations and needs must be considered, to celebrate diversity and the plurality of different visions and perspectives. This “patrimony process” focuses its approach on the people who build, use and celebrate a common heritage».

With “The Journey” as the central theme of DiVaM 2019 and calling for the inclusion of communities in the process of building new cultural projects, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve invites all cultural associations in the Algarve region to submit applications.
