Octopus beats sardines in sales value at auction

The octopus, with 35,5 million euros and an increase of 7,1% in the average price per kilo, was the most relevant species, in terms of sales value, at the Portuguese auctions during 2018, announced the Minister's office. of the Sea.

In second place, despite the restrictions on fisheries, was sardines, with a sales volume of 23,8 million euros and a price increase of 25,8%, followed by mackerel (14,7 million, +23,2 ,two%).

As for the auctions that sold the most, the one in Vila Real de Santo António comes in 5th place nationally, with 13 million euros in sales last year. The winner was the Peniche auction, responsible for a sales value of 34 million euros, followed by Matosinhos (26,8 M€), Sesimbra (24,8 M€), Aveiro (16,9 M€) and Vila Real de Santo António (13 M€).

Docapesca also stated that the value of fish traded at auctions and stations in Mainland Portugal, under the management of that company, amounted to 205,1 million euros in 2018, representing a growth of 4,9% compared to 195,5, 2008 million from last year. The fish traded thus reached the highest value since XNUMX.

The amount of fish traded also increased, from 95,8 thousand tons in 2017 to 99,7 thousand tons in 2018, corresponding to a growth of 4%.

There was also an increase in the average price per kilo, from 2,04 euros in 2017 to 2,06 euros in 2018, reaching the highest value since there are systematic statistical records.

On the other hand, in 2018, Docapesca obtained the extension of the certification of the food safety management system for the auctions in Sagres and Sesimbra, according to the ISO 22000 standard, totaling four certified establishments. This auction certification process will be reinforced in 2019.
