Lagos: “A Onda” transport service assured for the next three years

The fleet will be almost all new

The “A Onda” service, the urban transport network of the Municipality of Lagos, will continue to operate for the next three years, with an investment of around 3,5 million euros by the Municipality.

The provision of services will be carried out by Translagos -Transportes Públicos, Lda. under the terms of the previously defined specifications, the proposal presented and the contract to be signed, which stipulates a price of 1,394 euros per kilometer to be paid by the Municipality.

The private operator is responsible for ensuring the 10 circuits of the “A Onda” regular service currently in existence, their respective timetables and routes, allocating for this purpose buses with a defined capacity (20 seats on circuits with less use and 53 seats on those with higher demand ) and conditions for the access of passengers with reduced mobility, as well as assuming all the inherent charges (fuel, personnel, ticketing and billing, maintenance and cleaning).

According to information provided by councilor Paulo Jorge Reis, political responsible for the area, the fleet will be almost entirely new, although the specifications do not require it, and the number of seats per vehicle has also been increased.

In the debate that preceded the deliberation, Maria Joaquina Matos, mayor of Lagos, referred that «urban transport costs a lot to the public purse, translating into a great social service that is provided to the population», stressing that «what we want is that public transport is increasingly used, so that everything is closer and life more comfortable, whether for those who study or for those who commute daily to fulfill their professional obligations».

Another novelty is the way in which lines 5, 7 and 8 will be operated outside school hours, which is now guaranteed directly by the municipality – through its own means – in a Flexible Service modality, that is, upon request the user, but within the established itineraries and timetables, «a solution that will allow to respond to the identified needs and, at the same time, optimize the existing resources», concludes the municipality.
