Lagos celebrates the 446th anniversary of becoming a city with D. Sebastião in memory

Did you know that D: Sebastião celebrated his 20th birthday in Lagos?

D. Sebastião will be the central figure of the commemorations, on the 26th and 27th of January, of the 446th anniversary of the elevation of Lagos to the status of a city. 

«The elevation of Lagos to a city, which marks the 27th of January, represents one of the most significant moments in local history, constituting the recognition of the importance and the path traveled since the attribution of the Charter, by D. Manuel I in 1504 to the its elevation, in 1573, by D. Sebastião», says the City Council.

This fact led to the installation in the city of the governors of the Kingdom of the Algarve, making it one of the most important places that stood out in the History of Portugal. To mark this occasion, the municipality organized a series of activities.

On the 26th at 15 pm, the conference “Dom Sebastião, the King who raised Lagos to the city” will take place, by teacher Maria Augusta Lima Cruz, to be held in the auditorium of Paços do Concelho XXI century.

On the same day, but at 17 pm, at the Centro Cultural de Lagos, the exhibition “Sebastianismo Revisitado” by Sam Abercromby opens.

Sam is 71 years old and is Australian. He came to Portugal in 1986 and has lived in Vila do Paço for 22 years, where he has his studio.

“It expresses itself through painting, architecture, music, ceramics and literature. With a long career in Portugal, the artist has already held several individual group exhibitions. In the series of the work about D. Sebastião, the artist renegotiates the myth and life of Sebastião de Portugal. He reserves the right, as an artist, to take the accepted official myth and stories and “reinvest” in them, giving them creative, subjective, lyrical and heroic interpretations», says Câmara de Lagos.

On the 27th, at 15 pm, there is a commented visit, with a meeting point next to the statue of D. Sebastião, in Lagos.

D. Sebastião, on one of the several royal visits made to the Algarve, was based in Lagos, where he celebrated his 20th birthday. Due to the reception it received and having seen the growth of the then town (both in population and in terms of its socio-economic development), it decided to elevate it to a city on January 27, 1573.

During this commented visit, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the king's itinerary, to the then Kingdom of the Algarve, and particularly the observations of its chronicler João Cascão when D. Sebastião arrived in Lagos.

Registration is free, but mandatory (minimum of 5 and maximum of 15 participants, at the Municipal Tourism Office (Praça Gil Eanes / ([email protected])) until the 24th of January.
