User Commission wants «Algarve free of tolls in 2019»

«Tolls on Via do Infante contribute a lot to the aggravation of road accidents»

New proposals, by the Left Block and CDU, for the elimination of tolls on Via do Infante will be voted on on February 8, in the Assembly of the Republic, and the Commission for Users of Via do Infante wants a «Algarve free of tolls » already in 2019.

«In addition to the many millions of taxpayers' euros that every year end up in the pockets of the private concessionaire, there are more than 10 road accidents a year in the Algarve, for the third consecutive year (mostly on the “road of death” 125), with many fatalities and serious injuries and always on the rise», says the CUVI in a statement.

According to the Commission of Users, “during 2018 there were 10.604 road accidents in the Algarve (mostly on the EN125), with 40 fatalities and 195 serious injuries (10 more dead and 3 more seriously injured than in 2017). In 2017 there were 10.752 road accidents in the region and in 2016 there were 10.241, with several victims».

«And in this year of 2019, accidents in the Algarve do not stop growing. Between the 1st and the 21st of January alone, the region already has 453 road accidents (39 more than in the same period last year), with 2 fatalities and 11 serious injuries (in the meantime there were two more deaths on the EN125)», he adds.

«Tolls on Via do Infante greatly contribute to the aggravation of road accidents. Only its elimination will reduce the accident rate and drastically», he says.

«Once again the moment of truth will come and the Algarve will see live who is defending and who is against the Algarve, the users and its populations».

The Commission of Users of Via do Infante therefore calls for «a strong mobilization of the Algarve to be present at the Assembly of the Republic, on the 8th of February».
